Mission
LNPK Grocery is improving food access
LNPK Grocery’s vision is to create a thriving, health-focused environment where everyone has the opportunity to eat well, learn, and grow.
Groceries with a mission
LNPK Grocery is owned and operated by Ecolibrium3, a 501(c)3 non-profit. The mission of the grocery store is to provide fresh and healthy food at an accessible and convenient location for neighborhood residents. For the last 15 years, Lincoln Park residents have advocated for a grocery store in the neighborhood. We are responding to their call. Every purchase made at LNPK Grocery supports our mission to improve access to fresh, healthy foods.
How are we reaching our mission of improving food access?
We are:
- Filling the food access gap in the neighborhood by being located a 15-minute walk for most of the neighborhood, along a bike path, on a major bus transit route, and easily accessible by car.
- Stocking healthy and fresh options that fulfill weekly shopping needs.
- Growing chemically free food locally at our urban farm.
- Providing opportunities for food and nutrition education.
- Accepting SNAP and WIC benefits to expand accessibility to high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables to everyone.
- Building community support and connection at our farm, community center, and grocery.
- Investing in the neighborhood.
Why we do what we do
For many years, Ecolibrium3 has worked with community partners and neighbors to address inequities around food access and health in Lincoln Park. Some of these include:
- 2 in 5 residents report barriers to accessing food
- 3 in 5 residents report cost as a barrier to food security
- 7 in 10 residents are overweight or obese
- 1 in 5 residents report transportation access issues for food
The number one resident request to improve their health is a grocery store in Lincoln Park. We are filling this gap so that everyone can eat well, learn, and grow
The history of LNPK Grocery
Lincoln Park once held a plethora of neighborhood corner stores that gave residents the option to walk across the street or around the block in search of a quick snack or a missing ingredient for dinner. With eight small grocery stores within a three-block radius, this type of easy access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food used to be the norm for Lincoln Park residents. In 1973, Duluth had a strong representation of stores that carried groceries and meats, with 69 listings across the community. Yet, by 2013, the number had dwindled to a mere nine listings. Policy change and the rise of large chain grocery stores in the 1980s contributed to the decrease of small, independent neighborhood stores across the country.
Located at 2014 W 3rd St, the building now housing LNPK Grocery has a long history. Before serving the community as a grocery store, businesses like Carr’s Hobby Shop and Dream Party Sales, to name a few, were past tenants. The building also served as a police substation for a time. Most recently it served as the office for Ecolibrium3. The office was the birthplace for the idea that has become LNPK Grocery, continuing Eco3’s and the building’s ongoing evolution to meet the needs of the neighborhood.
The mission of LNPK Grocery is to improve food access by providing fresh and healthy foods at an accessible and convenient location.
