In 2002, families of those lost during the 9/11 terrorist attack came together to create a meaningful tribute for those they lost and honor the sacrifice of the people who stepped in during the aftermath. This effort resulted in the establishment of the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance in April 2009. Since then, AmeriCorps works each year with 911day.org and partners with many organizations to support a day of volunteerism and service in honor of the lives lost.
This year, our AmeriCorps members spent this 9/11 Day of Service serving our local Lincoln Park neighborhood. The volunteers began their day at the Eco3 Urban Farm helping harvest, weigh, and pack produce. This added capacity and made what would have been an ordinary harvest one with more variety and quantity to offer the community. During the second half of the day, our team split up: one half distributed produce at our Lincoln Park giveaway, while the other half set out with litter pickers, brooms, rakes, and a weed whacker to clean up the surrounding streets. Collectively, they collected a dozen buckets of trash and harvested and distributed produce to over 45 community members.
AmeriCorps leads the national 9/11 Day of Service, and our members were honored to stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow volunteers across the country, turning remembrance into meaningful service.
