Host an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer in 2027

For nearly a decade, the Ecolibrium3 VISTA Corps has strengthened organizations working to end poverty across northeastern Minnesota, from Duluth neighborhoods to rural counties and tribal communities. Now we’re looking for new host sites: nonprofits, public agencies, and Tribal Nations ready to build long-term pathways out of poverty.

Host site applications are open through November 6 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Build what you've never had time to build.

Every organization has a project it keeps setting aside. It might be a volunteer program, grant pipeline, a community partnership, or the system that would make everything else easier.

An AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer spends a full year building exactly that. They create the systems, tools, and partnerships that stay in place after their service ends, so your organization keeps the capacity it gained.

A VISTA volunteer might:

  • Design and launch a volunteer program, then write the manual that keeps it running
  • Develop a fundraising plan and grant proposals for a specific program
  • Establish partnerships with other organizations serving the same community
  • Create a database or tracking system to measure your impact
  • Develop curricula, outreach materials, or training resources

For example, a VISTA volunteer wouldn’t tutor students. They might design a volunteer tutoring program, recruit and train its first group of tutors, and create the guide that keeps it going after they leave.

You won't do this alone.

Hosting a VISTA volunteer doesn’t mean running a federal program by yourself. Ecolibrium3 supports you from your first conversation through the end of the service year.

Before your volunteer starts, we work with you to write the VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) and secure AmeriCorps approval. We also recruit candidates across the region, screen applicants, recommend candidates for you to interview, and submit your chosen candidate to AmeriCorps.

During the year, your volunteer joins a cohort of VISTA volunteers across northern Minnesota. The cohort provides orientation, monthly training, and support from VISTA Leaders, giving your volunteer peers and professional development beyond your organization.

Your role is to commit a supervisor who will mentor your volunteer, meet with them one-on-one every week, and invest in their growth.

Is your organization a fit?

To host a VISTA volunteer, your organization needs to:

  • Be located in northeastern Minnesota. Our service area includes Duluth and Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis counties.
  • Be an eligible organization type. That means an IRS-designated nonprofit, a public agency (city, county, state, or school district), or a Tribal Nation or Tribal agency. Organizations focused mainly on advocacy or lobbying aren’t eligible.
  • Focus on poverty. Your project should create long-term pathways out of poverty in areas like housing, food access, health and recovery, economic opportunity, or education.
  • Involve your community. The people you serve should help plan, carry out, or evaluate your programs.
  • Have at least one full-time staff member and a committed supervisor. The supervisor needs time for weekly one-on-one meetings.
  • Cover the host site costs. A member costs around $6,150.

Ready to host? A quick self check.

If you can answer yes to all five questions, you’re ready to apply.

  1. Do we have at least one full-time staff member?
  2. Do we have a supervisor with time for weekly one-on-one meetings with the volunteer for a full year?
  3. Can we commit about $6,150 for the year?
  4. Do we have a project that builds lasting systems, rather than one that delivers services directly or fills a staff role?
  5. If selected, can we work with Ecolibrium3 to finalize the position description and agreement within two weeks?

How it works.

  1. Apply by November 6. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
  2. Talk with us. VISTA Project Manager, Reese, reviews your application and follows up with next steps.
  3. Finalize the position. Selected host sites sign an agreement with Ecolibrium3. Using your application, Ecolibrium3 writes the VISTA Assignment Description and submits it to AmeriCorps for approval.
  4. Find your volunteer. Ecolibrium3 posts the position and recruits regionally, while you share the posting with your networks. We screen applicants and recommend candidates, and you interview and choose.
  5. Welcome your volunteer in January, May, or June 2027. Your volunteer serves for one full year.
