The AmeriCorps Legacy House: Something’s Cooking!

Since our last Legacy House update on finishing carpentry, we have made more visible improvements at the house; the kitchen has been installed!

To install the kitchen cabinets, Eco3 staff and super volunteer Dan Slick had to account for the uneven floors in the building. Originally built in 1910, the building’s roof had collapsed, rain had ruined the floors, and nearly all the supporting beams had to be rebuilt. With all of this in mind, slanted floors and slightly angled walls were expected. To install the cabinets so that they would be aligned with each other and level, we installed shims under the feet and along the walls behind the cabinets.

The kitchen countertop was ordered from Arrowhead Building Supply in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, and the countertop was a perfect fit! The future tenants can also clean up well using the dishwasher purchased at Daugherty Appliance, located in West Duluth.

Our new dishwasher, induction stove, and gently used fridge are all Energy Star appliances, which will lower electric bills to keep this house affordable for our AmeriCorps members living on a limited stipend.

We still have a few things to take care of before the house is complete, but we wanted to share with you that we are cooking on the renovation at the AmeriCorps Legacy House. We look forward to housing our new AmeriCorps members soon!
