During AmeriCorps National Days of Service, members have the opportunity to collaborate with other programs to address community needs and build teamwork. Members volunteer within their communities, highlighting the positive difference AmeriCorps groups can make through service across the nation. One of those National Days of Service is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day), a day of service to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.
In honor of MLK Day, members attended the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast and virtual broadcast program sponsored by the Duluth branch of the NAACP. After breakfast, the AmeriCorps members went to the Eco3 Urban Farm to help construct new farm infrastructure. The group started by building five shelving units for storage, then moved on to building six new raised beds. The new shelving will ease summer production by helping us organize our supplies, and the new raised beds will support farm beautification and accessibility for neighbors who need extra support for mobility.
As members of the Eco3 AmeriCorps programs serve at a variety of organizations across the community, participating in MLK Day events, and volunteering at the Urban Farm provided VISTAs the opportunity to contribute to the Duluth community as one unified group and connect with each other. We are grateful to community members and organizations who sponsored these events and anticipate next year’s National Day of Service.
