Social connection is a universal human need—we are wired for belonging at every age. Yet, as we age, staying socially connected can become more difficult. Changes in health or mobility, the loss of loved ones, retirement, transportation barriers, and winter weather can all limit opportunities to connect, particularly in northern communities like Duluth.
That lack of connection is a serious public health risk for older adults. In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a national advisory on loneliness and social isolation, naming it a serious public health concern. Research shows a lack of social connection can increase the risk for premature death as much as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day! The report links social isolation to increased risks of heart disease, stroke, depression, anxiety, dementia, and premature death—and emphasizes that strong social relationships are essential to individual and community health. Connection protects us.
That’s why Social Connection and Social Inclusion are core domains of the Age-Friendly Framework. Through the Duluth Age-Friendly Initiative, which Ecolibrium3 co-leads with community partners, we are working to create environments where people of all ages feel welcomed, valued, and connected, no matter the season or circumstances.
Connection is not a luxury; it’s a foundation of health and community strength. By supporting one another and staying connected, we help ensure Duluth remains a place where people can thrive at every age.
