Duluth Climate Mobilization

Duluth Climate Mobilization was formed in 2018 by a group of citizens seeking solutions to the climate change. The group’s first goals of getting the city of Duluth to declare a climate emergency and for the Duluth Energy Commission to take the lead on developing plans are now in process. The Duluth City Council declared a Climate Emergency in April 2021 and Duluth’s Sustainability Officer and the Duluth Energy Commission are taking the lead on developing the Duluth Climate Action plan.

The actions of this group to convince local city government that serious action must be taken to mitigate damage, be resilient and adaptable to the climate crisis has influenced other communities throughout Minnesota. Now over 15 other municipalities in Minnesota are in the process of declaring climate emergencies.

The next step for the group is to push Duluth to transition to zero net carbon emissions within 10 years, and to do so in a just way. The group feels the time for incremental policy change is over and that an all-hands-on-deck approach is needed to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and safely draw down excess carbon from the atmosphere at emergency speed. The Duluth Climate Mobilization strongly supports the Duluth Citizens’ Climate Action Plan and is helping to make it happen.
