Transportation accounts for an estimated 18-26% of Duluth’s greenhouse gas emissions. This is 488,440 tons community wide, or 5.6 tons per person.
With more than half of most people’s GHG emissions attributed to transportation, our individual changes add up. Switching to an electric car saves 3.5 tons of GHG a year, driving to work one less day a week saves 1.4 tons a year, and taking the bus one day a week saves 0.4 tons. Even just switching to a vehicle that gets 25 miles per gallon instead of 20 can reduce GHG by 1.7 tons a year. Moving to a clean energy electric grid to power electric transportation can go even further to decrease GHG emissions to zero. Actions that support our community members making these changes matter.
Here are steps some of our community experts recommend to prioritize street design and modes of transportation that put people first. Which actions will you commit to?
