Let Your Walking Needs Be Known

Transportation accounts for approximately 26% of Duluth’s greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce those emissions, we need to prioritize street design and modes of transportation that put people first like walking.

More and more adults include walking as part of a physically active lifestyle. But we also walk as a form of public transportation. Duluth can improve spaces and increase safe places to walk by supporting Complete Streets policies. Complete Streets is an approach to transportation design and policy that makes streets safe for all users including pedestrians, transit riders, bicyclists, and motorists. Complete Streets designs vary by location, but often include sidewalks, bike lanes, roundabouts, curb extensions, and more.

Contact your city leaders to ask them to support street design that supports walking. Add to the letter below the particular places in town that you would like to see improved walking conditions.

Dear City Councilor,

Transportation accounts for approximately 26% of Duluth’s greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce those emissions, we need to prioritize street design and modes of transportation that put people first like walking.

More and more adults include walking as part of a physically active lifestyle. But we also walk as a form of public transportation. It is important to me that Duluth improves spaces and increases safe places to walk.

I also encourage you to support Complete Streets policies that makes streets safe for all users including pedestrians, transit riders, bicyclists, and motorists. Greater consideration for the needs of pedestrians in our street design might include things such as usable sidewalks, median islands, accessible pedestrian signals, and traffic-slowing measures.

Lastly, I ask you to ensure sidewalks are shoveled in the winter and prioritize clearing snow along public walkways. By enforcing Duluth City Ordinance Chapter 45 Article VI that requires property owners with a public sidewalk abutting their property to remove snow and ice within 24-hours after a snowfall, we will have clear paths to get to work or school.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Your Name
